The University of Surrey’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) are leading institutes for audio-visual signal processing and multimedia, and mobile communication research, respectively. CVSSP is largely involved in research activities covering video coding and video communications, signal processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence, computer graphics, human computer interaction, QoE and usability, user interactions, human factors and multi-modal interfaces.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft undertakes applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprise and of wide benefit to society. Its services are solicited by customers and contractual partners in industry, the service sector and public administration.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications – Heinrich-Hertz-Institute (Fraunhofer HHI), located in Berlin, is a leading research institute in the fields of mobile broadband communications, photonic networks, and electronic imaging for multimedia. The Video division of this institute has a long experience in signal, image, and video processing. It comprises two departments that collaborate closely in fields related to multimedia and cover the entire chain of capturing, analysis, interaction, and visualization of 2D and 3D content (Vision and Imaging Technologies) as well as encoding and streaming (Visual Communication and Analysis).

HFC specializes in designing and configuring technical systems and software interfaces in terms of usability, product experience, acceptance and safety. With an interdisciplinary team that brings together expertise from psychology, engineering, mathematics and computer sciences, problems of hardware and software adaptation to human needs are solved.

The basis of the work at HFC is a high methodological competence – not only in human scientific and technical fields, but especially in interdisciplinary collaboration. Thus, the different questions of human- technology design can be handled for all domain applications. They range from the analysis of safety vulnerabilities over developing services such as GUI design or user guidance, to long-term research projects in occupational health and safety, and road safety.

As a subsidiary and multimedia competence centre of SRG SSR, the swiss public broadcaster, SWISS TXT AG has accompanied Switzerland into an increasingly complex digital future – from consulting to implementation with a strong focus on operations & Cloud Solutions. SWISS TXT AG provided the infrastructure, content management and commercializing of teletext offerings including the access services like captions and subtitling for the different language areas and all of Switzerland for more than 30 years.

One of the biggest department of TXT is dedicated to provide access services for foreign languages, hard of hearing (HoH), deaf & blind people with a strong focus on technology. The access services include captioning, subtitling, audio description signing. TXT provides the services to SRG but also to external customers like Sky or Pro7. Since this year TXT is offering remote access services for the HoH and deaf people in educational institutes in Switzerland.

The Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep (VRT) is the public broadcaster of the Flemish Community in Belgium. Its mission is to reach the largest possible number of viewers and listeners with a diversity of programs that arouse and fulfill their interest. To accomplish this, VRT owns 3 TV channels, 5 radio stations, 2 topical web portals and a full range of digital products and applications including an over-the-top video platform

VRT has been active in research and innovation projects with a dedicated lab for research activities for almost two decades. VRT Research & Innovation (VRT R&I) carries out research into the creation, management, distribution and consumption of media content. The lab has expertise in many facets of media production and media management.

Furthermore, VRT also has an in-house access services team working on open and closed subtitling, translation, audio description as well as sign language translations. Currently several TV programmes are already being sign-translated.
